The COVID-19 Disinformation Research and Reporting Act of 2021 directs the National Science Foundation to partner with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to investigate the impact of online disinformation on the public’s response to COVID-19. This study shall address the impact of disinformation and misinformation on the public acceptance and demand for COVID-19 vaccines, the sources of disinformation and misinformation, the mechanisms at play, and social media’s role in disseminating and promoting this harmful content. The study shall also investigate potential financial incentives to spread false information and suggest strategies for combating misinformation and disinformation in the future.
