Description

The For the People Act of 2021 is a comprehensive democracy reform package that would limit the influence of money in politics, crack down on gerrymandering, and expand access to voting. The bill also begins to address the online disinformation crisis by: expanding disclosure rules to online “electioneering communications”; requiring large online platforms to maintain a public database of all online political ads shown to their users — and to provide information on who the ads targeted, the buyer, and the rates charged; clarifying that digital political ads are subject to the same disclaimer requirements as offline communications; and mandating online platforms to make all reasonable efforts to prevent foreign individuals and entities from purchasing political advertisements to influence the American electorate.
